Why “Producer Jason”?
It was early in the life of FlashPoint…the kind of season where everything feels new, fast, and slightly improvised. We were figuring it out as we went, building the plane mid-flight, as they say. And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, during the middle of a live broadcast, Gene Bailey called me “Producer Jason”.
I don’t even think he thought twice about it. But from that moment on, the name stuck.
That’s how it goes when you work with Gene. One minute you're just doing your job…and the next, you’ve been unofficially rebranded with a title that somehow becomes part of your identity. "Producer Jason" wasn’t just a name. It became a character. A job title. A coffee brand.
Yes, coffee.
During another show, Gene made a crack…totally off the cuff…that people should swing by our booth at an upcoming event and “Producer Jason will buy you a cup of coffee.” The crew laughed. So did I. But a few months later, there I was…standing in a full “Producer Jason’s Coffee” apron, handing out hot coffee with custom cup sleeves bearing the logo we made for fun. It became a whole thing, and to this day, I’m still not totally sure how it happened.
But that’s the kind of spontaneity that defined that season of FlashPoint. We were serious about the mission, but we didn’t take ourselves too seriously. And with Gene, life was truly like a box of chocolates. You never quite knew what you were going to get…but it was ALWAYS interesting.
Today, that nickname lives on in a new way with the launch of this site: ProducerJason.com. It’s a hub for everything I’m working on now…new projects, podcast segments, speaking opportunities, creative ideas, and yes…probably still a little coffee here and there.
It’s funny how a nickname can follow you. Funnier still how it can lead you exactly where you’re supposed to go.
